Editor's Note:
Daniel Burman is one of the emerging young filmmakers that make up New Argentine Cinema. After filming several shorts, he completed his first feature-length picture, 'A Chrysanthemum Burst in Cincoesquinas,' at twenty-four, following three years of production. 'A Chrysanthemum Burst' won critical acclaim at prestigious fesitvals for Burman's unique style of storytelling. Following 'A Chrysanthemum,' Burman went on to film 'Waiting for the Messiah,' a film delving into the conflicts faced by a young Jewish man caught between traditional family ties and a desire to explore unlimited horizons. Much of 'Waiting for the Messiah' took place in the El Once neighborhood of Buenos Aires, a traditionally Jewish enclave home to the largest Jewish community in Latin America. Burman, himself of Polish Jewish descent, then stepped away from fictional filmmaking to produce the documentary 'Seven Days in Once' which follows the transformation of Once from its settlement to life in the aftermath of the 1994 attacks on the AMIA, its principal community center. Burman followed these productions with the feature 'Every Stewardess Goes to Heaven,' and has just completed filming 'El Abrazo Partido.'

The Latin American Video Archives is pleased to present three of Burman's works, A Chrysanthemum Burst in Cincoesquinas, Waiting for the Messiah, and Seven Days in Once.

Someone hits the wrong key in Hong Kong and a bank in Buenos Aires goes under. In an increasingly globalized world, a financial breakdown in the Far East instantly reverberates in the Third World, and modern-day Argentina is no exception. Some lose their savings, others their jobs. The film centers on the stories of Ariel, a young Jew proud of his origins but suffering an identity crisis; and of Santamaria, a bank employee whose dignity is at stake after losing his job, his house, and his wife. Ariel wants to discover the world, and Santamaria wants to get his back. 'Waiting for the Messiah' is an urban tale about the relationships between people who live in the small universes hidden within Buenos Aires.
