Between 1990 and 2000, the state of North Carolina has seen its Latino population quadruple in size. Coming from throughout Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, the state’s Hispanic population is currently estimated at about 1,000,000. Through testimony by activists, clergy, businesspeople, government officials, and Hispanic residents old and new, the film documents the lives of North Carolina’s Latinos and their struggles to simultaneously hold onto their traditions and adapt themselves to the mainstream culture of the United States. North Carolina is not accustomed to immigration, and backlash by nativist group and even the Klu Klux Klan has been strong, but the state’s Latinos and a number of church and state organizations have struggled to ensure quality of life for Latino students, workers, and other residents. The film focuses especially on the institutions that have formed around the state’s new Latino community, ranging from Latino-owned businesses and bilingual education programs to a Latino credit union and a nascent church-based labor movement. The film also covers the range of experiences of different Latinos who call North Carolina home, and the dreams that brought them to this country in search of a better life for themselves and their families.
