Editor's Note:
Pioneered by filmmaker Vincent Carelli, the Video in the Villages project has attempted to turn video into a tool that will help indigenous Brazilians express their identity, wage political battles, and communicate with the larger world. Over the past 14 years, the project has generated a rich body of documentary work capturing the indigenous peoples of the Amazon as they work to preserve their traditions, master new technology, and adapt to changing political and environmental landscapes. Originally indigenous videomakers were trained village by village; now those videomakers organize regional and national meetings to discuss the best way to respond to the issues faced by their communities.
