Editor's Note:
LAVA is pleased to present two of the many excellent recent films to emerge from Argentina. Juan Bautista Stagnaro, director of THE AMATEUR, has had a long and distinguished career. As writer, producer and director, he has collaborated with such cinematic giants as Maria Luisa Bemberg (as script writer for CAMILA) and directed films such as EL CAMINO DEL SUR and CASAS DE FUEGO. The four co-directors of BAD TIMES are recent graduates of the Universidad del Cine. Hailed as one of the first films to explore the daily life of post-dictatorship Argentina, BAD TIMES is emblematic of the country's recent cinematic resurgence.

"Pajaro may be unemployed, but he has a dream. A good amateur cyclist who never made it into the professional ranks, he resolves to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records by beating the record for continuous cycling. With Lopecito as his rather wobbly trainer, and against the scepticism and even the scorn of the town, Pajaro prepares for his grand mission. A winning combination of humour and melancholy, THE AMATEUR is a memorable drama of hope, redemption, and little bit of madness." -- Latin American Film Festival (Ottawa, Ontario)

This collective film by four of Argentina's most promising emerging filmmakers contains four stories that unfold simultaneously. It's election time in Buenos Aires and the bustling city is the backdrop for stories about frustration and deception. A young man from the provinces finds himself involved in an unexpected situation in "the big city"; an immigrant bricklayer is transformed by a pretty girl in the street; a teenager's crush on his classmate affects a man kidnapped for ransom; and an unsuspecting sound technician falls for the girlfriend of a politician. This elegantly structured and darkly funny film presents a synthetic portrait of contemporary urban life in Argentina. Awarded best Latin American film at the Mar del Plata Film Festival.
